What to do in case of adverse weather (guidance for parents and staff)

PARENTS

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES FOR SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS

HEAVY OVERNIGHT SNOW CONDITIONS IN THE AREA.

Please operate under the presumption that school will only close as a very last resort.

Should the conditions around the school be a cause for concern in the morning, the Headteacher will contact parents via In-Touch email between 7am and 8am to state that the school will be closed or remain open.  Information will also be on the school’s website and via Heart FM Essex on 96.3FM or 102.6FM.  In the absence of this specific information, please be assured the school is open.  Please DO NOT use the phone to enquire whether the school is open.  This blocks lines for teachers and other emergency users.

DAYTIME SNOW CONDITIONS AFFECTING THE AREA.

Should students need to leave early due to worsening conditions, a message will go out via In-Touch email, Heart FM Essex 96.3FM or 102.6FM or the website asking parents to collect their children from the school.

EMERGENCY SUPERVISION

Supervision will be available for students from the end of sessions until the end of the school day (2.50pm).

On receipt of the In-Touch email, it would be preferable for parents to arrive at the school to collect their children without telephoning first. This way the telephone lines are not jammed by incoming calls.  Students who, for whatever reason, cannot make their way home will be supervised until the normal end of the school day (2.50pm).

STAFF

In the event of deteriorating weather conditions during the day, the Headteacher will make the decision as to which staff need to leave the school early if possible, if they live in areas where conditions are becoming very serious or less accessible in poor weather.

A NOTE ON EXAMS

If school is closed as a result of extreme weather, we will do our best to ensure students take the exam at the next sitting.  If this is not possible, we will apply for special consideration.  However, if the school is open but the weather is bad, you must do your best to get into school as long as parents think it is safe to do so.

In very exceptional circumstances, it is possible to allow a very small number of students to start a little later (but not after the end time).
