Gable Hall School

ICT & Computing

The Computing Department benefits from having three specialist teachers, who enjoy keeping abreast with new technologies. They have a wealth of knowledge regarding applications in business and a keen interest in computing and programming. A mix of functional skills, project work and theoretical topics equip students with a wide array of knowledge and skills in preparation for whatever their future brings. Technology is a constantly changing and dynamic subject and it is therefore important that the department evolves with these changes, enabling students to live in the digital age both now and in the future.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7 all pupils will initially study a wide range of programs including an introduction to computing skills comprising spreadsheets, databases and other ‘office’ programs. The curriculum has now transitioned over to Computing which includes topics such as Kodu, Scratch and Python. These Units are taught as termly projects covering a range of programs within each project.

Key Stage 4

GGCSE Edexcel Computer Science is being studied by a small group in Year 11 as well as one pupil in Year 10. They are following the Edexcel GCSE ICT Course which is a linear course comprising of 2 examinations and a 20 hour controlled assessment.

This year (2017) over half of the year group obtained the ECDL qualification in IT in addition to their timetabled GCSE qualifications. The majority of those pupils gained either Distinction* or Distinction grades. At A’Level 100% of pupils achieved grade A in the ICT A’Level qualification.

There is GCSE support available to students on Friday evenings. Students are encouraged to attend extra sessions and use the computer suites during lunchtimes and after school to develop their ICT skills and for research and study across the school curriculum.
