Drama

The school houses 2 purpose built drama studio’s with lighting facilities and a range of large performance spaces. The school facilities also include a proscenium arch stage with room to seat 400 people and an excellent range of technical theatre equipment.  The theatre is used almost exclusively by the Performing Arts staff.  This allows pupils to gain valuable stage time during lessons helping them both to aspire to a greater standard of practical work and become familiar with the surroundings and workings of a theatre. All four staff members of the department are subject specialists and are examiners in their field.

 

Curriculum

KS3

KS3 drama is taught as a discreet subject to mixed set classes for 100 minutes a fortnight. We use a range of stimuli, varying from poems, script, photographs, books and news stories, in order to support literacy and current world issues. We cover topics such as: bullying awareness, the refugee crisis, Woman in Black, Blood Brothers and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 

KS4

Drama is a very popular option at KS4 with a regular uptake of between 60-70 pupils. We currently study BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts: Acting, level 2. This is a heavily skilled based course and allows pupils the freedom to create drama based on a range of topics as well as perform scripts. The qualification consists of three components that give learners the opportunity to develop broad knowledge and understanding of the performing arts industry and the specialist skills and techniques in acting. The assessment process is broken up into 3 components.
Component 1 – Exploring the Performing Arts
Pupils will study different practitioner methodologies and learn to incorporate them into a variety of themes and cover a range of performance styles.
Component 2 – Developing Skills and techniques in the Performing Arts 
Learners will take part in workshops that will develop their understanding of drama techniques, skills and genres and allow them to develop full performances.
Component 3 – Performing to a Brief. (Externally assessed)
Learners will become a theatre company and design, develop and create a performance within a set topic.
 

Extra-Curricular

Pupils are keen to participate in a range of clubs that are offered within the drama department. These clubs are changed each year as a result of surveys that are organised by our arts council members, in order to keep them fresh and so that pupils needs are fulfilled. We have recently started to offer the LAMDA course and work towards the examinations in one of our clubs. We also offer a theatre trip for each year group, every year, with trips to see Annie and Woman in Black already booked.

The department prides themselves on finding performance projects to take part in and organise an annual school musical, showcases at Christmas and summer and take part in the Shakespeare School’s Festival every year. We also aim to have professional practitioners, directors or performers coming into the school to run projects with our pupils. For instance, we have recently been working with a theatre company on “The Hidden Project”, which has seen our pupils having input into a performance that will tour schools up and down the country.

 Pupils interested in technical theatre play an important role in school productions and events and a ‘Tech Club is also offered; they work alongside teaching staff and the Performing Arts technician gaining experience in lighting, sound and crewing.  This year we have run a series of technical theatre workshops for students from local secondary schools and have taken students to different venues on backstage tours. Prefects have an important role to play within the department too offering mentoring to younger students and running lunchtime clubs.
